LAPD officer Sunil Dutta, writing 100% seriously in a WaPo op-ed entitled (I kid you not) “I’m a cop. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t challenge me.” (via hipsterlibertarian)
The sense of entitled, sadistic, “moral disengagement” by the police is truly disheartening. How can they build trust in a community they are using for their role-playing FPS fantasies?
He basically said:
"Give up your rights as a citizen, civilian, and human being when dealing with me, and I might let you live.”
So are these animals and thugs?
Or, misguided young boys who are going through a stage?
except comparing what’s going on in Ferguson to the 2011 riots is obviously stupid to anyone who knows anything about what happened.
Firstly, the killing of Mark Duggan is in a very different context, the police in the UK do not, and have not killed many people full stop, let alone the extent of things going on in America. There is an issue of race in the Met, but again, this is not to the extent of some forces in America.
Secondly, the riots ended up having very little to do with the shooting, there was a single peaceful protest on the 6th of August, followed by 4 days of riots that spread far beyond the Tottenham community.
Thirdly, innocent people were killed by these rioters, tonnes of others were injured, including 186 police offices and 10 firefighters, fire engines were attacked, at least 100 homes were destroyed and an estimated 48,000 local businesses were effected.
And finally, to address the facetious rhetorical questions, yes, these were stupid thuggish twats, and they were roundly denounced as such by the media, by politicians, by members of their communities. The only ones who are trying to suggest that there was any public reaction other than “fuck the rioters” is twats like you trying to make some point about a separate issue happening in a completely different country.
Comparing what’s happening in Ferguson, a situation that the rest of the world is frankly looking on in horror and indignation at the actions of the police, to the 2011 riots is doing the people in Ferguson a disservice. You are trying to compare a largely peaceful protest movement that’s being violently suppressed to what was essentially a violent crime wave. If that’s not counter to the spirit of the Ferguson protests then what is?
